"Nine Lives" by Thomas DeSoto

In 1991, I was hired by Rip Curl wetsuits to film three time World Surfing Champion Tom Curren to Search the world for the perfect wave. While in South Africa I took off on my own to the Transki to film true nature in the wild. On my last day, as the sun began to rise over the African plane "Sunrise over Africa", with just one roll of Velvia left in my camera, I discovered a large pride of lions "The Circle of Life". I noticed one of these lion cubs had a Blue Cataract Eye walking sideways,"The Blue Eyed Hunter". Suddenly a Zebra burst out from behind the brushes and was chased down by a large female lion,"Nine lives". As a photojournalist you never quite get over the sounds and sight of a pride of lions devouring a Zebra in the wild. The Stock, The Kill, The Reposed, The Hunter, The Hungry all in one image of film. Such forces of nature are truly humbling and formidable. This unique set of events was pure serendipity as nature unveiled herself to me in a way that could never be duplicated again. 24 hours later,I flew back to Johannesburg where I face a whole new Jungle and set of challenges.
