"Nile Croc" by Thomas deSoto
"Sweet Tooth" Photograph Thomas DeSoto. When I was filming on location in Africa for a feature film, I went to visit my friend Peter Beard famous wildlife photographer in Central Africa at a place called Lake Rudolf in Kenya, the start of the great Nile. Here is where some of the largest Nile Crocodiles can be found. Some are over 18 feet long 4 feet high and weighing as much as a truck. They can run as fast as a dog, especially when they're hungry. The crocodiles that you can see aren't the problem. It's the ones that are inches from the top of the murky brown water that you can't see coming at you when your in a small wooden boat that had me on edge. As I shot this picture I startle this giant crocodile and he went straight in the water right towards us in this tiny little boat. But when I saw the look on my guides face suddenly change with his eyes wide open looking like he saw a ghost with the fear of god in his eyes, I dropped my camera and started to help him paddle back to shore as fast as we could. I've never been so scared in my life but I did get a nice shot of him as the sunrise rose over the water.
